Decision to grant a pardon aggravates the already-strained relations

Armenia protesta contra la injusticia

Six political forces of the European Parliament have prepared draft resolutions on Safarov’s case

Six groups of political forces which are part of the European Parliament have prepared draft resolutions related to the decision to grant a pardon and liberate axe-murderer Ramil Safarov, who was extradited to Azerbaijan by Hungarian authorities. Resolutions will be discussed and put to the vote today – on the last day of plenary session of the European Parliament and will be considered as part of the discussion on fundamental freedoms, human rights and democracy in general.
The draft resolution of the European People’s Party (EPP) Group, which is by far the largest political group in the European Parliament, mentions that the decision by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev to pardon Ramil Safarov aggravates the already-strained relations between the sides and strengthens feeling of injustice reasoned by the unsolved conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh.
The Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe Group considers that the decision by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev to pardon Ramil Safarov is a step contradicting humanistic purposes of “Convention on the Transfer of Sentenced Persons” adopted in Strasbourg. This step shatters trustworthiness of protestation given by Azerbaijani authorities to authorities of Hungary in the part of guarantees according to which Safarov had to take his punishment in his motherland.

The draft resolutions prepared by European United Left/Nordic Green Left and The Greens/European Free Alliance Groups also condemn the decision to pardon and release the murderer and call the Armenian and Azerbaijani authorities to continue the negotiation process over peaceful settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
