Great marine painter’s canvas handed to the National Gallery
RA Ministry of Culture handed yesterday Ivan Aivazovski's "Storm at Rocky Shores" canvas to the National Gallery of Armenia. The painting was stolen 21 years ago from the Armenian Cultural Affairs and Cooperation Society with Foreign Countries and was scheduled February 26 for sale at “Gelos” Auction House of Moscow.
The famous "Storm at Rocky Shores" canvas, which was restored several times by various collectors, was shipped to Yerevan in assistance with the present owner, RF Senator, Doctor of Technical Sciences Hovhannes Ohanyan, head of the Federal Service for Supervision of Legislation Observance in the Field of Cultural Heritage Preservation of the Russian Federation Victor Petrakov, executive of the same Service’s Department of Revealing and Returning of Cultural Values Oleg Derevyanko, and art critic Shahen Khachatryan.
After being stolen from Armenia the canvas had appeared at different people, the last but one “owner” was a high-ranking Russian official, and then it passed to an “oligarch”. From this last “owner” it was bought by Hovhannes Ohanyan with the intention to transfer it to the fatherland.
